University bioenergy team adds one

ATLANTA - A new eminent scholar is joining the research team at the University of Georgia to search for better ways to turn the green plants into fuel for cars.

The University System Board of Regents today plans to name Harry Gilbert as a Georgia Research Alliance eminent scholar in bioenergy in UGA's Complex Carbohydrate Research Center.

Gilbert's research specialty includes finding ways to turn pine trees into ethanol.

Gilbert will be UGA's second eminent scholar whose specialty is bioenergy. The first, Chung-Jui Tsai, works in the Warnell School of Forestry where she focuses on a different aspect of turning pine trees into fuel.

A Research Alliance eminent scholar at Georgia Tech, David S. Sholl, researches hydrogen-fuel production.

Gilbert joins UGA from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in Great Britain, where he earned five patents and published more than 180 research articles in 16 years.

The research alliance and other foundations raised $1.5 million to endow Gilbert's seat - and the 59 other eminent scholars in various fields. The endowment forms a base for applying for additional research grants from other agencies.
