Time for conifers

10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Piccadilly Farm, 1971 Whippoorwill Road, Bishop

Piccadilly Farm is one of the prettiest little nurseries in these parts, nestled up Whipporwill Road in Oconee County. If you didn’t know it was there, you’d drive right past it. But inside the lovely wooded acreage, you’re given a trusty old red wagon to load up with plants, and being that fall is planting season, we bet you’ll find some conifers (they have one of the larger collections in the Southeast) or other goodies to get in the ground before the first frost. (Wait, what’s frost again?) In celebration of its Sixth Annual Conifer Weekend, there will be guided tours of the conifer gardens at 11 a.m. on both days led by retired University of Georgia professor Sam Jones. The tours will cover kinds, culture, drought resistance and landscape uses for conifers. Free and open to the public. (706) 769-6516.

Time for pumpkins, too!

In case you can’t tell, we love fall, so we’re going to make a day of it, and after visiting Piccadilly, head down the road to Washington Farms for a visit to the pumpkin patch. In addition to getting a pumpkin picked out nice and early, you can get lost in the 8.5-acre corn maze from 3
